In this guide we are going to be going over how to use Genji’s ultimate to the very best of its ability. You see, Genji is one of the most popular heroes on Overwatch, because well, he's a ninja and who doesn't like playing with a ninja? All jokes aside a lot of people do use him because of his ability to move quicker than other heroes as well as just having a different playstyle than the same ol’ point and click with a gun. By the end of this guide you are going to be the Genji master and you will be able to use his ultimate to the point where your teammates will want you to choose Genjii every single time.
Know Your Targets, Know Your Teammates
Now to start there's a few things that you just need to know right off the bat. First you gotta understand that Genji’s ultimate requires to be close range to your opponent. That is one downside is that you have to get right up to the opponent and swing at them. Thus, it is critical that you pay attention to who you plan on using your ultimate on as well as chaining it to who you plan to switch to after your first kill.
For example, if you go in and use your ultimate on a tank, you are never going to get anywhere with that. Tanks are just that, they are tanks. They are designed to absorb as much damage as possible. Your ultimate will barely put a dent in them when they are at full health. This is sometimes one of the most common mistakes that new Genji player’s make. What's going to be most effective is if you go after the support heroes and clearing them out and then afterwards looking for either people who are low on hit points or squishy targets (i.e. DPS characters like McCree).
Now that you know who to target when using your ult, you also have to keep in mind who your teammates are. If you have a Zenyatta on your team then go ahead and ask for an orb so that you can get the HP regen while using your ultimate. In another instance, if you have someone like Zarya on your team then ask for a shield so that you're able to go in and absorb a little more damage.
It's important not only to know who you're playing up against but also who's on your team. This goes for any hero you play, not just Genji. Different characters have different abilities and you have to learn the abilities of all the characters so that you are able to react and adjust. So, step one know your targets and know your teammates.

Get Behind the Opposing Team
I can't count the number of times when I've been paired with a Genjii and they rush in face first trying to eliminate an opponent only to pretty much get headshot and lose the ult entirely. In most cases you really must try to get behind the team and I know this is hard and it's easier said than done but when you're behind the team you can sneak up on some of the support heroes and slash away and literally once shot them. Once you do that you can simply use your dash and double jump and get out of the situation right away. The goal is to score a kill get rid of one of their healers or support and walk away without taking any damage.
Combine Your Ult with Others
An incredibly important aspect of Overwatch is communication. I think a lot of people fail to realize this. The game was designed as a team based the game. It’s not a game where you can go in solo and try to beat out a team of 5 people when you don't communicate with your own team.
Genji’s Dragonblade becomes even more powerful when you combine it with someone else’s ultimate on your team. A lot of the time what I like to tell my teammates is to use an ult so that the opposing team is distracted and then after that I'll use Dragonblade and go in and score some kills while they’re occupied with another alt. This is especially the case when the opposing team has a Roadhog or McCree which can just shut me down, so there's really no point to use my ultimate if it's going to go to a waste when the opposing team can just nullify my ability.

The Double Jump & Sacrifice Technique
Too many players don't take advantage of Genji’s ability to double jump. The ability to double jump gives you an advantage where you're able to look down as an overview at your opponent so you can gauge where everyone is at. So one of the best tips I can give you if you're about to use his ultimate is double jump in the air and look down.
To do that: Hold left shift, look to the sky, press your spacebar twice, and then simply put your camera downward so you can see where everyone is. Do this a couple times until it’s second nature and you can understand where to attack. In lower ranks, most of your opponents are not going to know where you are because they’re too busy trying to kill other people that are on the ground.
So what you can do is jump up, look down, use your ultimate while you’re in the air and then as you're going down you can dash to them and start slashing away and attack anything in sight. Now this is more of a suicide mission here because you're going to be going in through the front line without any protection or back up but a lot of times if you're able to trade yourself for one of their support heroes it's a really really good trade off. Don't be afraid to do that if your team is in need of trying to gain a certain point during the match because it's a huge advantage when their healer is out of the game why you still have
There you have it, 4 tips to help you improve when using Genji and his ult. Don’t be afraid to go in and give them a shot! If you need more help, don't be afraid to get some Overwatch 1 on 1 coaching to help you improve.
